IEC 63372, a new IEC Standard released in January 2026, is a welcome addition to the IECQ environmental verification portfolio, which will use it in addition to ISO 14067 for its Carbon Footprint of Product Verification Certificates.

A couple of years ago, the IEC, through its IECQ Quality Assessment Scheme, launched a package of IEC environmental conformity assessment services, which included carbon footprint verification, to help build trust and credibility in companies’ commitment to monitoring and reducing their CO₂ emissions. The services are an essential tool to help industry, and society more generally, reach zero emissions targets.

The portfolio is part of a large focus on environmental services offered by the IEC and which includes, in addition to the above-mentioned scheme, a circular economy services portfolio which supports industry in improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, and demonstrating credible environmental performance.

Obtaining an IEC verification statement certificate gives industry stakeholders independent assurance that an organization or a company has prepared its carbon footprint claims in accordance with internationally agreed standards, such as ISO 14067 which, according to IECQ Executive Secretary Chris Agius is “a generic standard that covers any product.”

From May 2026, organizations can now apply for Carbon Footprint of Product Verification Certificates based on IEC 63372, a new standard which specifies requirements and provides guidance for quantification and communication of carbon footprint as well as emission reductions and avoided emissions from electric and electronic (EE) products and systems.

“By adding IEC 63372, we ensure that IEC Carbon Footprint of Product Verification scheme covers both electrical and non-electrical products, making it an all-round verification and certification service, that can be used by any company,” Chris Agius says.

IECQ is one of the four conformity assessment (CA) systems administered by the IEC. The three other systems are IECRE (the IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications), IECEE (the IEC System for Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components) and IECEx (the IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres).
